☕ Lungo
The Longer Pulled Espresso Shot
A lungo is an espresso shot made by allowing more water to pass through the coffee grounds during extraction. The word “lungo” means “long” in Italian.
Compared to a standard espresso shot, a lungo uses a longer extraction time and produces a larger volume of coffee with a lighter body and slightly more bitterness.
✨ Why Lungo Matters
- ☕ Creates a larger espresso-style drink
- 💧 Produces a lighter body than espresso
- 🌰 Pulls additional flavor compounds
- ⚖️ Offers a different flavor balance
⚠️ Lungo vs Espresso
A lungo differs from a traditional espresso shot in several ways:
- 💧 More water is used
- ⏱️ Extraction time is longer
- ☕ Volume is larger
- 🌰 Flavor may taste more bitter or smoky
Over-extraction can happen more easily with a lungo if brewing is not carefully controlled.
🔥 Flavor Characteristics of a Lungo
- ☕ Smooth but bold
- 🌰 More roasted flavor
- 🍫 Lower sweetness
- 🔥 Slightly increased bitterness
A well-made lungo still maintains balance while offering a longer coffee experience.
⚙️ Factors That Affect Lungo Flavor
- Grind Size → affects extraction speed
- Water Volume → larger volume increases extraction
- Roast Level → darker roasts often suit lungos well
- Extraction Time → too long may create bitterness
